Common student loans

The federal government offers several loan programs to qualified students. These low-interest loans are to be paid back over time.

  • Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). For parents with students enrolled at least half-time in undergraduate programs.
  • Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF). For Minnesota residents enrolled at least half-time.
  • Stafford Loans. Amount awarded is determined by financial need. Loans may be subsidized or unsubsidized.

Federal grant programs

The federal government offers several grant opportunities to qualified students. Financial aid awarded through grants does not have to be paid back.

  • Academic Competitiveness Grant. For students enrolled in their first or second years in undergraduate programs who have completed rigorous secondary programs.
  • Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). Financial assistance provided to students with exceptional financial need.
  • National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant. Financial assistance provided to full-time students in 3rd or 4th year post-secondary programs that focus on math or science
  • Pell Grant. Financial assistance provided to those with financial need.
